AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 is the recognised technical standard for high-visibility safety garments in Australia and New Zealand. The standard meticulously outlines the minimum amount of tape necessary on various garment sections, such as sleeves, waistbands, and leg cuffs, to ensure the wearer is visible from all angles. Tape patterns are an indispensable aspect of high-visibility safety garments, specially devised to optimise the wearer's visibility in low-light conditions.

The process of applying tape patterns to workwear is crucial in ensuring that the tape is securely attached and remains visible during use. Tape patterns are applied to safety garments through various methods such as heat press, sewing and adhesive bonding. The application process of tape patterns is determined by multiple factors, such as the material and design of the garment, as well as the type of tape being used. Proper application of tape patterns can ensure that the garment meets the necessary safety standards and provides optimal visibility to the wearer, reducing the risk of accidents or injuries.

Hoop Pattern

Standard hoop pattern typically consists of one or more horizontal stripes of reflective tape that run around the waist or chest of the garment. This provides a clear visual that helps to alert others to the presence of the wearer. Commonly used in safety workwear, and it has become a popular choice due to its effectiveness and ease of implementation.

Biomotion Pattern

Biomotion tape requirements have entered the Australian and New Zealand Standards and is recommended for workers who need to be highly visible in low-light conditions, such as road work, construction, and emergency services. The biomotion tape pattern is specifically designed to improve the visibility of workers in low-light Situations by highlighting the natural motion of the human body (elbow and knees) and visibility from all angles, including when the wearer is bending, moving and/or crouching down.

H-Pattern

The H-pattern tape configuration typically consists of two vertical stripes of reflective tape that run down the front and back of the garment and one horizontal stripe of tape that connects the two vertical stripes across the chest or the back. This creates an "H" shape that is highly visible and recognisable, even from a distance.

X-Back

The term "X-Back" is commonly used in the Australian NSW rail industry. It was introduced in the rail industry to help improve safety for workers working with or near railway tracks. One of the safety concerns in this context is ensuring that workers are always visible to train operators, mainly when working near tracks. The X-Back harness design helps to address this concern by creating an "X" shape across the back of the wearer.
